When in the classroom, I would always give 5' to my students to brainstorm before discussing a writing topic as a class. I would walk around and check their ideas, making sure they were making an effort to come up with arguments. In my online classes, we do this through the chat function! This is even better because it allows students access to everyone's ideas and they also try a bit more, as they do not want to be exposed. They have 5' to type a response to my prompt and they all hit "Send" together!
