Abstract
The use of literature in EFL has long been praised for its benefits, but little is done to incorporate it in the Greek classroom. This portfolio is an experiment on how literature in EFL can boost learner motivation, improve their critical thinking, and make them better readers both in and outside the classroom, while also enhancing their language skills. It was created based on my philosophy of teaching, and theories and techniques regarding the implementation of literature in EFL, such as those by Lazar, Showalter, Dunning, Rosenblatt, Carter and Long. The literary work “All Summer in a Day” was used to create a series of six lessons, focusing on the interrelationship between setting and character and how we may be shaped by the environment around us. The implementation of the lessons in the classroom proved highly beneficial for the learners, who offered positive feedback, made choices and judgements based on the story, were sensitized towards the phenomenon of bullying and understood the effect of setting on character—drawing from literature to better understand their own life.
Key Words: literature, EFL, setting, character, bullying, reading
