YouTube in EFL

Computer Mediated Communication is becoming one of the most widespread methods of human interaction. However, its incorporation in the EFL setting has not been achieved and there is little evidence of it in EFL coursebooks. This paper discusses the distinct features of CMC, focusing on aspects of digital orality and more specifically vocabulary. User comments under two popular YouTube videos are analyzed and specific linguistic elements identified. Simultaneously, three EFL coursebooks for the CEFR levels B1, B2, and C2 are examined regarding their implementation of CMC vocabulary. Based on the findings, activities on how best to supplement the already existing material are provided—aiming at improving learners’ communicative competence at these levels.

Key Words: CMC, digital orality, YouTube, EFL, vocabulary
